Glad to see our clamps being used and blogged.A helpful hint when sanding large pieces, support blocks {same height as the clamp} will reduce the movement of the workpiece. For larger workpieces use two or more clamps in a chain.More info at www.v-clamp.com :)

[...] On build day 1, we cut all of the plywood pieces for the cabinet and desk side, and planed the rough lumber down to just sligtly more then 3/4". First step today was the enjoyable task of sanding all the plywood using a belt sander and and orbital sander. If you do not have a belt sander and/or an orbital sander, you could do this by hand, or skip. If you skip, your final finish will not be as nice, but it will still be good. Tim just purchased a nice little vacuum hold down, so I put it to use in holding the plywood down to the work bench. It worked perfectly. [...]

That is how I have done it in the past. I built a set of bookshelves in my basement with just a sketch on a 2×4, and it turned out great. This time I thought I would do everything from a proper design, drawings, to buying rough lumber from the mill and planing it down. Over all it has been a good learning experience.

We started on 2/18/06 with cutting up the wood, etc. I have some pics, just need to get the time to get them up. :-)

Yeah, I am ashamed. :-( But, building a new desk will make it all better.

Not sure what I expected to find when Jason mentioned that you started a blog, but I'm pretty damn sure that a desk modeled in SolidWorks was a bit of surprise. This is a big improvement on my technique of "fire up the table saw and see what can be screwed together afterwards". That worked OK on my bathroom cabinets, though.

Cable management would be cool because no matter how organized a work space is you always end up with a bird's nest of cords.
